Habit Tracking 2.0

Problem

The existing app interface and functionality didn’t support anything beyond bluetooth brushing behaviors, brushing achievements and shopping. Research showed that the majority of users do not adhere to the full ADA-recommended regimen for oral hygiene, which includes daily flossing and mouth rinsing.

Objective

Empower and incentivize users to improve their oral hygiene by building better habits, inclusive of brushing, flossing and rinsing.

In true startup fashion and without time for formal usability testing, opportunities for reducing friction arose throughout the design iteration process.

So, we trusted our gut as subject matter experts and proceeded full steam ahead!

Some Use Cases We Uncovered

  • How will a user be compelled to track another habit once they’ve completed one?

  • What if a user only wants to track one habit vs. all three?

  • What if a user wants to track more than the recommended number of times?

  • This is a lot of new stuff, how do we teach users what’s going on?

  • Don’t we need to educate users about the nuances of different types of mouthwash?

  • Where do we explain the variability of rinse frequency depending on the type of mouthwash?

  • How do we add more coachable moments?

  • Can we somehow drive to purchase?

  • How do we educate users on ADA recommendations for oral hygiene?

Before

Originally, the quip app only allowed users with bluetooth quip Smart Brushes to track their habits.

After

With a UI refresh and new features and functionality, users can now not only track quip Smart Brush activity but also effortlessly track their manual brushing, flossing and rinsing. We also launched Achievements, providing surprise and delight to support the 3 Rs of habit formation referenced above.
